Hoover says she doesn’t want to be confined to a genre, but most of the books could be described as romances or thrillers, and it is clear that her fans want and expect something specific from a Colleen Hoover book – they call her CoHo, and themselves Cohorts. Her Goodreads account (which is very funny, with joke reviews and comments by her) jostles for “most-followed-author” status with Stephen King and Bill Gates – right now her new book means she is at the top. So far in 2022, five of the top ten best-selling print books of any genre in the US are Hoover’s. Her back-catalogue books are also bestsellers: a phenomenon almost unheard-of in publishing. The company has printed 2.5 million copies for the US, and another 800,000 for the UK and other markets – and are already reprinting. And for Hoover, the figures are staggering. Her new book, It Starts With Us, following her earlier heroine Lily as she tries to rebuild her life, is the most pre-ordered book in the history of publishing giant, Simon & Schuster.
